“I didn’t reach out to Adam until a few months after my accident because I thought, ‘What’s the point?’ I feel bad for those who, like me, almost stay silent, not understanding the process. My neighbor recommended Adam Handler, so I decided to call. Adam was very caring, sympathetic, and understanding. I had total trust in him. Adam and his team did a great job!”
- Shonda from New York, NY
What Happened?
On June 8, 2022, Shonda was walking down the stairs in front of a hotel when she slipped, twisted her ankle, and fell, severely injuring her right ankle. She immediately experienced pain, swelling, deformity, and difficulty bearing weight on her foot. Shonda was taken by ambulance to the emergency room, where she was diagnosed with a displaced trimalleolar ankle fracture (a fracture of all three bones in the ankle). In the ER, she underwent a closed reduction procedure, where the bones were realigned without surgery, followed by splinting to immobilize the injury. She was discharged later that same day.
As a result of the fall, Shonda endured significant pain, worsened by walking, bearing weight, and movement in general. Unable to walk, she relied on a rollabout scooter to get around. Although she initially had a non-invasive procedure, Shonda underwent right ankle surgery on June 21, 2022. For at least 4 weeks, she couldn’t bear weight on her foot and was partially disabled from daily activities.
Shonda’s NYC Staircase Accident Lawyer
Shonda initially didn’t think it was worth the effort to contact a lawyer and planned to move on. Fortunately, her neighbor, a past client of ours, encouraged her to reach out to Adam Handler. After investigating the case, we found that the building steps were wet, with no warning signs posted. Despite the building management’s lack of cooperation, including the removal of staff involved and initial denial of video footage, our team was relentless. We successfully obtained the footage of the accident, which proved critical in the case. Thanks to our dedicated NYC staircase accident lawyer, Shonda's medical bills were fully covered, and she secured a $500,000 settlement from the defendant’s insurance company!
