What Happened?
On April 17th, 2022, Kiara was pregnant and a front-seat passenger in a vehicle that was stopped at a red light near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Webster Avenue in New Rochelle, New York. While waiting for the light to turn green, Kiara’s vehicle was rear-ended! The driver of the other vehicle told the police that he was fighting with his brother and accidentally hit the car Kiara was in. Kiara was taken by ambulance to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital where she and the baby were examined, treated, and discharged home. Two days later, she went back to the emergency room because her pelvis pain worsened.
Kiara injured her lower back and right hip due to the accident. For the next few weeks, she returned part-time to her job as a designer to work one day and then “rest” the following day which meant staying in bed all day and experiencing constant pain in the back, right hip, and lower abdomen. Since she was 32 weeks pregnant at the time of the accident, treatment was placed on hold until she delivered her healthy baby boy in July 2022. After giving birth and several months after, Kiara had difficulty holding her baby and it caused her lower back pain to get worse. When several weeks of conservative treatment failed to improve her back injury, Kiara underwent lower back surgery (lumbar spine discectomy L5-S1) on June 20, 2023.
