What Happened?
On June 23rd, 2018, Ann Marie was driving when she slowed down to a stop at the intersection of East 103rd Street and Avenue L in Brooklyn, New York. She began to make a left turn when she was suddenly hit on the passenger’s side by another vehicle that did not stop! The force was so strong that her vehicle overturned and struck two parked vehicles that were unoccupied. Ann Marie was taken by ambulance to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. She had diagnostic testing performed and was given pain medication before being discharged home.
As a result of the accident, Ann Marie suffered injuries to her neck, lower back, right hand, and right knee. She described the worst area of pain in her lower back as a constant aching sensation associated with muscle spasms. She also experienced paresthesia (pins-and-needles prickling sensation) in the lower extremities. Ann Marie’s neck pain felt like an intermittent aching sensation that was aggravated with head movement. When conservative treatment did not work, she was required to undergo pain management injections to her neck. The pain in her right hand also felt like an intermittent aching sensation. She experienced right-hand weakness, aggravated pain when grasping, and had to undergo a laceration repair. Her right knee pain (lateral meniscus tear) was aggravated by stairs, and she often experienced buckling and locking. Due to these injuries, Ann Marie was unable to work for months.
